How to Clean a Flag Properly

Learn how to properly clean your flag. The American flag is the most honored symbol of the United States, and flying it proudly over your home demonstrates to all your patriotic pride, but harsh weather, wind and dust can leave your treasured flag looking soiled and unsightly. To restore the luster of your flag, follow these simple instructions.
First: Washing the flag
Most American flags are made of a combination of materials including nylon, acetate and cotton, and though you would normally use a washing machine for garments made of these materials, always wash your flag by hand. Fill a large tub with cool water and a little laundry detergent. Gently rub the material to remove dirt and grime, and then rinse well with cool water.
Second: Removing rust or other stains
To remove rust or other stains caused by bad weather and outdoor elements, simply add a small amount of an oxygen-based bleach to the tub of cool water, and allow the flag to soak for several hours before following the directions in step one.
Third: Drying the flag
No matter what type of material your flag is made of, never put the wet flag in the dryer as this can cause shrinkage and puckering of the fabric. Hang it on a clothesline or rack to drip dry. For cotton flags, press with a hot iron to remove wrinkles, and for all other materials, use a cool iron.
Fourth: Cleaning old or decorative flags
To preserve old, valuable or decorative flags, especially those with gold tassels or other embellishments, it is best to leave the cleaning to professionals. Most dry cleaners can safely clean your treasured flag, and many offer free or discounted services in the month of July.
