FAQs About the American Flag

The American flag is a very common sight in the United States, especially on special occasions like the Fourth of July. However, many people still have questions about the flag and how to display it correctly.

Q: How large is an American flag?
A: American flags come in a wide variety of sizes, from tiny hand-held examples to large flags intended for porch flagpole holders and flagpoles. Although the proportions of an American flag are set by executive order for official flags, unofficial, privately-made flags come in a variety of different sizes.
Q: How is an American flag cared for?
A: Although many flag users are not aware of the full regulations, the United States Flag Code offers a detailed code of flag etiquette. The code prescribes respectful means of destroying used flags (by burning), guidelines for respectful display and handling of the flag and prohibits use of the flag for advertising and decoration. However, these provisions carry no penalty for violation and are widely ignored.
Q: Where is the best place to display American flags?
A: Americans display the flag in a wide variety of locations. Many choose to equip their homes with flagpole holders on the front porch in order to display a large American flag. Others display the flag in windows, atop cars and some even wear American-flag clothing. Some of these uses are considered disrespectful by some Americans, and are against the United States Flag Code. In general, it is best to keep flag displays sober and respectful in order to avoid offending others.
